New Hero Swims Intelligently In A Tough Sport

Vicki Michaelis and Eileen Blass of the USA TODAY created an excellent background piece on Alex Meyer.

In the build-up to the 2012 London Olympics, the American sports media will undoubtedly center their focus on swimmers like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Natalie Coughlin and all the established stars of the powerful USA Swimming team. But the story of an articulate, soft-spoken Harvard University intellectual seems too good a story to pass up. If Alex wins a medal in the shadows of Buckingham Palace in a venue that was created nearly 300 years ago in a sport that requires equal parts combativeness, strategy and aerobic conditioning, he will be an enticing and engaging subject to an American media looking for new heroes.
