Nike Swim Sponsors Open Water Splash at ASCA World Clinic

The American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) convened over 1,000 coaches and swim businesses for the world’s premier swimming convention in Las Vegas, Nevada September 7 – 11th.

In collaboration with Nike Swim, the World Open Water Swimming Association organized three sessions to elevate the importance of open water swimming, where Americans have earned one Olympic medal over the four Olympic Games since the 10k Marathon Swim has been an Olympic event.

Kicking off the open water program, WOWSA CEO Quinn Fitzgerald acknowledged ASCA for their leadership investing in the growing sport and explained WOWSA’s role in promoting open water swimming globally.

Steven Munatones, Bonnie Tsui and Aaron Peirsol

WOWSA Founder, Steven Munatones, moderated a lively and insightful discussion between 5-time Olympic Champion and World Record Holder, Aaron Peirsol and best-selling author of ‘Why We Swim’, Bonnie Tsui

They discussed the importance of open water as a valuable tool to avoid burnout and of building life-long swimmers who can enjoy the water long after their collegiate careers.  Aaron, having just returned from Sydney Australia from Duel in the Pool, also noted how many of the Australian national team members also compete for their local lifesaving clubs, racing in surf, paddle boarding and various swim/beach challenges. Growing up in Newport Beach, Aaron credits much of his success and longevity in pool swimming to having a positive relationship with the water outside of the pool.

Ron Aitken led the second of the day’s events. He explained how he’s built open water training and racing into his incredibly successful program at The Sandpipers of Nevada. He credits open water for improving not only his team’s status nationally, but also enhancing his pool program. He challenged fellow coaches to explain why they aren’t doing more open water. Responses, whilst legitimate, ranged from logistical and administrative considerations to simply not having a background in the sport. Ron systematically addressed their concerns with practical advice and called on the governing bodies in the sport to host more international open water competitions in the US.

The final session, a workshop, was conducted by Olympic 10k silver medalist Haley Anderson and 4-time World Championship Head Open Water Coach for USA Swimming, Catherine Kase. The duo are the only Americans to earn an open water medal in the Olympic Games.  Haley and Catherine walked through their 12 year partnership focusing on open water swimming, with tactical advice on everything from season planning to training and racing in open water.

Catherine Kase will continue her mentorship of other coaches in a virtual clinic in October with WOWSA.

Lauren Tischendorf, Aaron Peirsol, Bonnie Tsui, Steven Munatones, Quinn Fitzgerald

In addition to the speaking engagements, WOWSA hosted an exhibition booth in collaboration with Nike Swim. WOWSA team members Lauren Tischendorf of Australia and Quinn Fitzgerald of California shared first-hand experiences of open water swimming as well as useful resources with hundreds of coaches eager to get more involved in open water swimming.
