Amateur and professional swimmers from Greece and abroad will start 1.5 km, 3 km, 5 km and 10 km races in Pefki, Evia of the Municipality of Istiaia –Edipsos. The Authentic Marathon Swim have been designed by the Greek national swimming coach Nikos Gemelos who was interviewed on this week’s WOWSA Live.
Gemelos has coached world champion and Olympic silver medalist Spyros Gianniotis since 1997 – through the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics in the 400m and 1500m freestyle and Olympic 10K Marathon Swim. Gemelos talks about his achievements and preparations – and the Authentic Marathon Swim course that he desined.
The event revives a course over the shipwrecks of the naval battle of Artemision that actually took place in 480 B.C. Modern-day swimmers will follow the example of Skyllias and his daughter Hydna, the first marathon swimmers according to Herodotus, The Father of History. Herodotus helped the Greek forces in the historic naval battle of Artemision against the Persian fleet. The demanding route will be held at the straits of Artemision, connecting Central Greece with Thessaly and the regional units of Evia, Magnesia and Fthiotida.
