The classic 58-minute head-to-head, leave-it-all-in-the-water duel between Ashley Twichell and Emily Brunemann at the 2012 USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championship 5 km race is shown in its entirety below.

“I got touched out by 3 tenths of a second at the world championships so that played on my mind,” said Twichell who won this battle 58:54.17 to 58:54.47.

“Ashley is such a great swimmer. Going into it, we were both tired after a 10K and Crippen Mile last night, but I was proud of the effort we put in,” said the ever-gracious Brunemann, a champion in her own right. It was a pleasure to watch from beginning to end.
