Course Description

An Open Water Coaching Certification Program + Virtual Clinic led by 7-time World Marathon Swimming Champion, Shelley Taylor-Smith.

This certification course & clinic will provide the tools to implement or improve your club’s open water program.

Take the online course at your own pace and join 4 weekly live zoom discussion sessions led by Shelley Taylor-Smith.

Designed for year-round head or assistant coaches to educate on everything from proper open water swimming techniques to race tactics.

Coaches who pass the program will be able to safely coach young children in short introductory open water swims as well as coach elite swimmers in national and international 5 & 10k competition.

The certification program will educate interested individuals on everything from proper swimming techniques to race tactics. Individuals who pass the program will be able to safely coach young children in short introductory open water swims as well as escort marathon swimmers in the English Channel.

Certification Levels

  • Level 1 – a score of 75% correct answers on the WOWSA test .
  • Level 2 – a score of 80% and coach 1 athlete who has completed a 5 KM swim in open water.
  • Level 3 – A score of 85% and one athlete who has completed a 10KM Swim in open water.
  • Level 4 – A score of 90% and coaching of one athlete who has completed a 25 KM swim, or competed in a national championship event.
  • Level 5 – A score of 95% and coaching 1 athlete who has competed in the Olympic Games or an international championship event or completed a channel crossing.

Shelley Taylor-Smith

Using her thirty plus years of experience as athlete, coach, writer and consultant Shelley helps individuals in the sporting world from beginner level onwards as well as business people on performance and lifestyle issues to discover the mental toughness to stay on top of your game despite the daily obstacles you face in your business and career with her everyday life motto: “Get Up, Get Over It & Get On With It.”

Her first major achievement was breaking the world four-mile record in 1983. Subsequently, she won the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim five times, breaking the world record in 1995 for swimming the 48 km distance in five hours, 45 minutes and 25 seconds.[2] She also won the Australian Marathon Swimming Championships three times, and seven consecutive FINA Marathon World Cups. She won a gold medal in the inaugural open water swimming event at the 1991 World Aquatics Championships in Perth, and a bronze at the 1994 Championships in Rome.

She was elected to the FINA Athletes Commission as Chairperson. In 2000 was appointed Honorary Secretary, FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee (TOWSC) 2000-2009 and on October 27, 2005 her 30 year dream became reality with the inclusion of the 10km Marathon Swim event into the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games programme. She trained the Chinese Open Water Swimming officials and co-ordinated the Beijing Olympic Games 2008 inaugural 10km Marathon Swim from 2005-2008.

She conducts beach workouts for triathletes and open water swimmers, offering an additional training option in the pool to help develop and transfer open water skills to all open water venues. At the same time, she offers pool-specific swim training and small group squads for committed open water swimmers preparing for their Everest… the English Channel.

Steven Munatones

Southern California native, born 1962, is the creator of the WOWSA Awards, Oceans Seven, Openwaterpedia, Citrus Corps, World Open Water Swimming Association, Daily News of Open Water Swimming, Global Open Water Swimming Conference. He is Chief Executive Officer of KAATSU Global and KAATSU Research Institute. Inductee in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (Honor Swimmer, Class of 2001) and Ice Swimming Hall of Fame (Honor Contributor – Media, Class of 2019), recipient of the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Poseidon Award (2016), International Swimming Hall of Fame’s Irving Davids-Captain Roger Wheeler Memorial Award (2010), USA Swimming’s Glen S. Hummer Award (2007, 2010) and Harvard University’s John B. Imrie Award (1984). Served on the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and as Technical Delegate with the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, and 9-time USA Swimming coaching staff.

Process

  2. Review course materials in the materials section

  3. Proceed through the course content and mark each module “complete” as you go
  4. Once you’ve completed the course, you will receive a link to the online exam
  5. Once you’ve completed the exam, you will be prompted to provide verification of the highest achievement one of your swimmers has achieved
  6. WOWSA will review your exam, documentation, and within 3 days, will issue your certification at the appropriate level
