Open Water Swimmer To Carry The Olympic Torch

Open Water Swimmer To Carry The Olympic Torch

In 2008, marathon swimmers Petar Stoychev of Bulgaria and Natalie du Toit of South Africa received the honor to carry their country’s flag at the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

And the open water swimming Olympic tradition will continue in 2012.

Spyridon Gianniotis of Greece was selected to be the first to carry the London 2012 Olympic flame. The 10K world champion will be the first of 500 torchbearers who will take it on an 8-day journey around Greece.

Then the flame will be ceremonially given to a representative of the London Olympic Games who will transport the torch on a gold airplane to England where the torch will begin a 70-day relay around the UK.
