Today is the Orca Herne Bay to Watchman’s Island Swim, a 2.2 km open water swim that goes out and around Watchman’s Island in Herne Bay Reserve in New Zealand.

The event offers the Orca Cup and miniatures plus vouches for the fastest non–wetsuit swimmers, the Wai Wai Shield for the fastest club swimmers (handicapped), and the Wai Wai Cup for fastest club swimmers. The histories for these swims goes way back to at least 1912.

It is the kick-off event to the Harbour Swim Series, a four-swim series in Auckland organised by the Auckland Central Masters Swimming, designed to build confidence and distance over the swimming season.

The Harbour Swim Series includes:

* Orca Herne Bay to Watchman’s Island Swim: 2.2 km on November 15th 2015
* Bays Swim: 3.6 km on December 13th 2015
* Chelsea Sugar Swim: 2.4 km on February 21st 2016
* Rangitoto Swim: 4.6 km on April 10th 2016
