Ruben Gonzalez has been preparing for his recent successful 5 km tandem swim with Jade Perry in the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands) from Isla Gran Malvina (West Falkland) to La Isla Soledad (East Falkland) through the Strait of San Carlos in 9-10°C water in 1 hour 26 minutes.
Not only has he frequently prepared by swimming in Nahuel Huapi Lake and Mascardi Lake, he also swam across the Beagle Channel in 2013 between Argentina and Chile in 8°C water, swam 2.5 km in 7°C water near the Perito Moreno glacier in southern Argentina, he swam in 2 km in 9°C water in Loch Ness, Scotland in 2015 and again 2.5 km across the width of Loch Ness, Scotland in 10°C water, he swam 2.5 km in Lago del Desierto in 2016, a lake in the Andes Mountains on the border of Chile in 9°C water, and then won the 2 km Argentinian Cold Water Swimming Championship in the Viedma River in 6°C water as well as swimming in Mar del Plata during winter when the water temperatures were between 8°C and 10°C last year.
Southern California native, born 1962, is the creator of the WOWSA Awards, Oceans Seven, Openwaterpedia, Citrus Corps, World Open Water Swimming Association, Daily News of Open Water Swimming, Global Open Water Swimming Conference. He is Chief Executive Officer of KAATSU Global and KAATSU Research Institute. Inductee in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (Honor Swimmer, Class of 2001) and Ice Swimming Hall of Fame (Honor Contributor - Media, Class of 2019), recipient of the International Swimming Hall of Fame's Poseidon Award (2016), International Swimming Hall of Fame's Irving Davids-Captain Roger Wheeler Memorial Award (2010), USA Swimming's Glen S. Hummer Award (2007, 2010) and Harvard University's John B. Imrie Award (1984). Served on the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and as Technical Delegate with the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, and 9-time USA Swimming coaching staff.
