Problems Continue For Odaiba Marine Park

Less than a week after the Tokyo 2020 Marathon Swimming Test Event was cut short from 10 km to 5 km, and the start time was moved forward to 7 am due to the warm air and water temperatures, problems continued for the planning of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The Para Triathlon World Cup course along the same course in Odaiba was canceled due to poor water quality deterioration.
Similar to the Tokyo 2020 Marathon Swimming Test Event, the Para Triathlon World Cup also served as a test competition for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. As a result of the water quality tests failing the parameters set by the International Triathlon Uni, the Para triathlon was changed to a bike-run duathlon.
According to the officials, E. coli in the water was higher than the maximum level set by the International Triathlon Union. Note: Strains such as E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
Despite the recent problems with heat and water quality in the test events, the swimmers and their coaches are hoping for the best because FINA and IOC have stated that the venue for the the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim will not be moved. There is no Plan B and if it rains – like it did on Wednesday, the resulting urban runoff can create problems in the water of Odaiba Marine Park that sits near the heart of Tokyo, a densely populated metropolis of 9.2 million people.
In contrast, the Japanese news reports stated that the triathlon officials said that there is a possibility that the triathlon venue can be moved.
Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay that sits well within a number of other artificial islands surrounding it that impacts the natural tidal flow of water in Tokyo Bay.
