Professional Pack Positioning In The Open Water

Professional Pack Positioning In The Open Water

This aerial photo by Fly Me Cancun of the men’s lead pack in the FINA pro races in Cancún, Mexico show how the experienced professionals bunch up in a tight pack.

They constantly position themselves within the pack, trying to find the optimal draft to make surges and moves throughout the race.

But every now and then, there is an outlier.

These outliers move outside the pack. They try to get a better line to the next turn buoy or finish. They also attempt to take advantage of currents or ocean swells or believe they will get the inside line with a different angle of attack. From what we have seen among the professional ranks, taking the different line of an outlier rarely can overcome the overall speed of the lead pack.
