Radostin Krastev Wins with the Fastest 500m in Ice Swimming History

The IISA 5th World Championship began today in Samoëns, France with heats in the 100m breaststroke, 100m butterfly, 4×50 mixed medley relay, and the 500m freestyle where 27-year-old veteran Alisa Fatum of Germany and 21-year-old newcomer Radostin Krastev of Bulgaria set world records.

The men’s race in the 500m was so fast that the top 3 swimmers broke the existing world record of Marcin Szarpak of Poland: 21-year-old gold medalist Radostin Krastev, 36-year-old Olympic marathon swimmer Andreas Waschburger of Germany, and the 21-year-old Szarpak. Two-time World Aquatics 25 km world champion Axel Reymond finished fourth in the fastest 500m ice swim in history.
