Ralph Mohr Survives, Doing It All In Cascade Lakes

71-year-old Ralph Mohr has done it all.

As did 40 other swimmers.

At one of America’s greatest celebration of open water swimming, the Cascade Lakes Swim Series in Elk Lake in Oregon, there are special competitions for the most fit and most enthusiastic athletes. In addition to offering 5 races (0.5 km, 1 km, 1.5 km, 3 km, 5 km) over a 3-day weekend, the Cascade Lakes Swim Series, participants may enter any or all of the five swims in the clear mountain lake at 4,900 feet (1,500 m) above sea level.

The Series tests the navigational IQ and competitive tactics of the swimmers in a variety of ways: the 0.5 km races are individual time trial on an out-and-back course; the 1 km swim is along an irregular course following the shoreline; 1.5 km and 3 km swims are on a triangular course; the 5 km swim includes three loops of a diamond and triangular course.

The Series also tests the competitive mettle and endurance of the participants in a unique way. It includes a Short Series (500m, 1000m, and 1500m races), a Long Series (1500m, 3000m, and 5000m races), and a Survivor Series (500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m races). Each swimmer may enter one distance series only and must complete all the races in order to be eligible for the Series awards. For awards, points will be based on finish order in each race with a wetsuit deduction when applicable.

The wetsuit deduction is dependent on the water temperature If the water temperature is below 68ºF, there is no adjustment or penalty in the Oregon Open Water Series for wearing Category II swimwear (includes wetsuits or non-confirming swimsuits). There is also no penalty for Category II swimwear in any swim in the 5-swim Survivor Series. However, there is a time adjustment of 10% to account for the Category II speed advantage in the Short Series and Long Series scoring.

The Survivor Series is where Ralph Mohr not only survived, but thrived. As did the 40 other swimmers who completed the Survivor Series.
