Reconnaissance in The Cayman Islands

The Google map shows the 4.88-mile route taken by Felix Ebanks, Matthew McKinley, Bill McFarland, Andrea Roach and Kate Alexander between Cayman Brac (island on right) and Little Cayman (on left) in the Cayman Islands in 2010.

Last year, we learned that the current runs from the north,” explained Kate. “We ended up a bit south with a strong head current at the end – approximately 5.44 miles. A group of us, including American Lexie Kelly, is planning to swim again on April 17th.”

Besides achieving their own swim, the group will be able to do a bit more reconnaissance for the Bridging Cayman Islands Swim, an 80-mile solo swim between Grand Cayman and Little Cayman Island by the renowned Penny Palfrey in early June. Like any unprecedented swim, especially in the ocean, the tides, currents, winds and marine life are relatively unknown elements that require much study and research.
