Anna Cummins, Executive Director of The 5 Gyres Institute, announced that the 5 Gyres Institute, a team of scientists, artists, filmmakers, advocates, educators and students, will embark on its Viking Gyre Expedition in June.

Our return to the North Atlantic allows 5 Gyres to follow up on unanswered questions, like ‘Which fish are eating all the plastic bottles?’ and ‘Are foraging fish excreting micro-plastics in fecal pellets that sink to the seafloor?’

We’ll also be on the hunt for plastic microbeads. The Great Lakes drain out into The North Atlantic and prevailing currents push from west to east. As such, we’ll see if we can find these tiny beads in the vast ocean. Our crew will be giving daily updates on 5 Gyres and sponsors’ blogs
.”

The expedition can be followed on 5 Gyres Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with hashtag #VikingGyreEx. Cummins will also answer questions from the online community while on the expedition at sea.
