Ronnie Wong Man Chiu Honored By International Marathon Swimming Hall Of Fame

Ronnie Wong Man Chiu was elected as an Honor Administrator in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

Wong is the long-time chairman of the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee and a former Olympic athlete. The Hong Kong businessman participated in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and 1972 Munich Olympics as a swimmer in the 100m freestyle and 200m individual medley and in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as the Hong Kong team manager. He also competed in the open water and was the 3-time winner of the 1968, 1969 and 1970 Hong Kong Cross-Harbour Swim. He has also played water polo as the Hong Kong team captain in the Asian Games and has been an event organizer. He talked with International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame chairman Ned Denison on today’s edition of WOWSA Live.

During his interview, he spoke about:

* his fond memories of his career include the long professional river swims in South America
* his long career on the FINA Technical Open Water Swimming Committee since 1992. He served since as the TOWSC chairperson since 2009 and oversaw the 2012 London marathon swim and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro marathon swim as well as visited over 30 countries and 50 cities
* the benefits of wearing his swimsuit during the professional marathon swims
* creating the Asian cluster to help get the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim into the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games
* serving as a FINA delegate during cross-border swims like Switzerland to France
* discussions between the IOC and FINA regarding the limitation of Olympics athletes to 10,000 and its possible impact of the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim
* how the more popular the sport of marathon swimming becomes, the better global support is generated for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim
