The innovative Biomimicry Guild was founded by Dayna Baumeister and Janine Benyus who authored the book Biomimicry, Innovation Inspired by Nature.

Dayna explains that many solutions to mankind’s problems – from design of products to medicinal solutions – can be found in nature.

Biomimicry represents a paradigm shift away from the belief that we humans are the cleverest and most perfectly evolved. When people believe that humans are the cleverest species, they might say, ‘Why would I bother trying to learn from nature?‘”

One of the biomimicry success stories involves sharks. The solution to infections caused by Staphylococcus aureau superbug that killed more than 19,000 people in the United States in 2005 were found in the bacteria-resistant scales of sharks. The scales of the Galapagos shark can be replicated and was commercialized by Sharklet Technologies that released the SafeTouch skin line. Used in hospitals and restrooms, the solution to a vexing problem was found in the ocean on the skins of sharks.
