Go For A SWIM Across The Sound

Elizabeth Fry, one of the 35 people in the world who have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming and the record-holder for the reverse-circumnavigation of New York City (11 hour and 48 minutes), announced the applications are available for the 23rd Annual St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound Marathon on August 7th.

The 25K (15.5-mile) swim across the Long Island Sound, from the state of New York to the state of Connecticut, is open for solo swimmers, two-person relays and team relays. Similar to the Trans Tahoe Swim that starts in the state of Nevada and ends in California, the St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound Marathon is one of the few interstate swims in America.

The SWIM, started in 1987, has raised millions of dollars over the years – US$350,000 in 2009 alone. Each team relay is required to raise a minimum of US$7,500, two-person relays must raise a minimum of US$3,500 and solo swimmers a minimum of US$1,500. All the funds benefit the SWIM’s 36 cancer services, which provide financial support and care to patients and their families for the needs that health insurance companies do not cover in addition to support groups, education, prevention and wellness programs in the community.
