Alex Kostich, a Vice President at Sony Pictures Studios, leads an idyllic lifestyle as he travels from the South Pacific to the Caribbean Sea with many stops between participating in hundreds of open water swimming events over his two-decade career.

One of the most unique events that he participates in is the annual Bora Bora Liquid Festival.

Created by Stefan Lambert, the Bora Bora Liquid Festival make its ocean swim unpredictable and ever more challenging every year. Lambert changes the course each time the event is held as he levels the playing field and discourages returning swimmers from having a strategic advantage. And to make things even more interesting, the race distance is increased by 1 km each year.

The swim in Bora Bora is definitely the most unusual,” Kostich explains. “It involved laps around a private island last year, with a climb up a ladder out of the water to a path bisecting the island. We were required to run through the island and dive off the pier on the opposite side and continue swimming.

The Bora Bora Liquid Festival is a 7-day celebration of sports and ocean-based endurance events taking place on Bora Bora, Polynesia’s most beautiful island atoll. The event has grown since 2000 into an open water celebration of sporting excellence and Tahitian culture. 2010 marked the introduction of the Bora Bora 5 km swim, which will become a 9 km ocean swim in 2014.
