Cork Lions Club and University College Cork, in association with the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the World Open Water Swimming Association, will present the 2013 Global Open Water Swimming Conference in Ireland on October 11th – 13th.

There are so many things happening in the open water swimming community, both in Ireland and around the world,” says Steven Munatones, founder of the Global Open Water Swimming Conference.

What Stephen Redmond did over the last few years: digging so deep, never giving up, putting everything he has on the line, to achieve the Oceans Seven is just one example of the courage and passion shown by open water swimmers of all ages and abilities. When enthusiasm and organizational skills that Oswald Schmidt, Paschal Horgan, and Ned Denison bring to the table, when they proposed to bring the Global Open Water Swimming Conference and the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame induction ceremonies to Ireland, it was a no-brainer. In the hotbed of open water swimming, the Irish will undoubtedly host a grand celebration of the sport.

The conference will address topics of environmental, scientific, and sporting relevance to the open water swimming community as well as reports and presentations from well-known and not-so-well-known athletes at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.

Last year, Stephen Redmond, the first person in history to achieve the Oceans Seven, will headline the Conference. The man from Ballydehob in West Cork was subsequently voted WOWSA Open Water Swimming Man of the Year in a global online poll. “Thus the idea was born to bring the awards ceremony to Cork,” explains Schmidt. “The WOWSA Awards will take place during the Annual Global Open Water Swimming Conference, which for the first time comes across the big pond to take place in Cork in October.

The Conference Organising Committee is inviting all open water swimmers who are in the process of swimming the Oceans Seven to come to Cork and celebrate with Stephen Redmond, and the first two women to complete this feat – Anna-Carin Nordin and Michelle Macy. Come to Cork and take this opportunity to congratulate them personally and pick their brains on how it can be done
