Subject to the Whims of Nature
Guest Post by Antonio Argüelles
Three months ago, I attempted a double crossing of the English Channel. As in any open water swim, I knew I was subject to the whims of nature; I was aware that there could be winds, currents, and other obstacles that swimmers usually face. What I never imagined when I started my swim on August 4th is that, inside my body, another “crossing” parallel to mine had begun: that of a gallstone that had moved from my gallbladder to the bile ducts and had obstructed the passage of bile. Although I am familiar with the waters of the English Channel, this time my swimming strokes took me into dangerous and unknown territory. This is the story of what happened that day. I hope you enjoy it.
