Swift Swimming In Sabac

The FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix race in Serbia was a 19K professional marathon swim that along the Sava River, starting in Jarak and ending in Sabac. The men swam in a pack with Ivan Afanevich (RUS), Damian Blaum (ARG), Rodolfo Valenti (ITA), and Mohammed Saleh (SYR) among its leaders.

The women swam in a looser group with Anna Guseva (RUS), Karla Sitic (CRO), and Alessandra Romiti (ITA) in the lead after the first hour. On the women’s side halfway into the race, Anna and Karla broke free of their competitors to swim the rest of the way together.

During the final 5K, Guillermo Bertola (ARG) took a different line from the lead pack that included Ivan, Damian, Rodolfo, and Mohammed. Guillermo held on to win fairly comfortably in 2:43:59 as Mohammed touched out Ivan 2:44:17.86 to 2:44:18.14. On the women’s side, Karla stretched out the field to win in 2:55:52 over Anna (2:56:37) and Alessandra (3:05:25).
