Swim the Suck: An Unforgettable 10-Mile Open Water Challenge in Tennessee

Swim the Suck, an exhilarating 10-mile downstream open water swimming race, is set to take place in the stunning landscapes of Chattanooga, TN. Organized by the Chattanooga Open Water Swimmers (C.O.W.S.) and sanctioned by United States Masters Swimming (USMS), this event promises an unforgettable experience for all participants.

The race follows a challenging river course that meanders through the Tennessee River Gorge, with its steep canyon walls creating a mesmerizing “S” curve. The 12th Annual event will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, commencing at the Suck Creek Boat Launch at 9:30 AM. The race will culminate at the captivating Wohali Nvya, a private property that offers a picturesque finish line.

Before the main event, swimmers and their companions can indulge in a delightful Friday night pasta dinner and race briefing in downtown Chattanooga. This pre-race gathering provides a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends and meet the kayaker who will guide participants along the course, if assigned.

For those in need of a kayaker, the race director expertly coordinates kayak rentals and shuttle services. Each swimmer and pilot is treated to two meals, a stylish t-shirt, and a unique award featuring original local artwork. After conquering the challenging race, swimmers can celebrate their achievement at the post-swim festivities.

The race begins at the Suck Creek Boat Launch, located on the right side of the river (North shore) at River Mile 453.3. The invigorating journey concludes at the Wohali Nvya on the left side of the river (South shore) at River Mile 443.55. Pilots drop off their boats at the starting point the day before the race and proceed to the finish line for parking. On the morning of the event, swimmers and pilots park at the finish line and board buses that transport them to the start. The race officially kicks off at 9:30 a.m., with most swimmers reaching the finish line within 4-5 hours. Following the race, a celebratory meal, refreshing drinks, and awards ceremony await at the swim finish area.

Swim the Suck promises not only a thrilling and challenging swimming race but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the stunning natural beauty of the Tennessee River Gorge. With its meticulously organized logistics, dedicated volunteers, and vibrant post-race celebration, this event is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who participate.
