Back in 2011, the 1.2 km out-and-back Moville Lighthouse Swim was attempted as a proof of concept from the Moville Pier to the Moville Lighthouse in Donegal, Ireland. It then started to grow.

15 people participated in the 2012 race (won by Gerard Curran in 17:00 and Sinéad Quinn in 28:13), 25 swimmers in 2013 (won by Gerard Curran in 17:18 and Maedb McCloskey in 19:01), 39 swimmers in 2014 (won by Gerard Curran in 15:59 and Elaine Robie in 21:09, and 84 swimmers in this year’s race on July 18th (won by Cormac Gillen in 17:12 and Olive Conroy in 20:35).

But at least one focused swimmer, English Channel veteran Ger Carty from Dublin, had to pull his weight…and much more along the course.

Songwriter and singer David Casey composed the theme song for the Moville Lighthouse Swim; listen here.
