The Monster Mile is a 2-mile biathlon for children that includes a 1-mile ocean swim and 1-mile ocean run. It is sponsored and organized by the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards and held annually in August.
Participants wear costumes and use fins for the swim. This year’s theme was zombies.
The kids run a mile and swim a mile with their fins . 9-year-old girl Sofia Del Villar with the pink fins won [see above]. [Olympic champion] Aaron Peirsol was there at the event helping too. The surf was big, so it was a pretty exciting ocean experience for all of the kids and parents.
