Swimming Safely With The World’s Best Open Water Swimmer

Ana Marcela Cunha, who was announced the Best Female Athlete in Open Water by FINA Aquatics World Magazine will take part in the 41st Annual Fort Lauderdale Rough Water Swim in Florida. Bruce Wigo, CEO of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, is implementing various new safety aspects into the race this year including swimmer safety devices.

We want to show that open water swimming is very safe if safety precautions are followed,” said Ana Marcela. “That was not the case in Dubai, where there were few observers and both the water and air are excessively hot. Open water swimming is a wonderful sport and we are more than satisfied that this swim will be as safe as any competition in a pool.”

Given the recent tragic events in Dubai, we are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of every swimmer and for our race to maintain its perfect safety record,” said race director Bob Duenkel. “We are working closely with Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue to ensure that all standards established by the United States Lifesaving Association for open water swimming are in place, and then some. We are also providing safety buoys and encourage swimmers to use them for an experimental test to see if they are a viable for open water races in the future. The swim is parallel to the beach and swimmers will be observed from both the beach and ocean side of the course.”
