SwimÖresund Launches new Channel Crossing from Denmark to Sweden; Mariel Hawley of Mexico Completes Inaugural swim
The new swim and governing association takes you across the beautiful strait Öresund which connects Denmark and Sweden. The swim starts at Bellevue Beach in Denmark and finishes at Lundåkrabukten in Sweden. The distance is 20 km (10.8 nautical miles).
Quinn Fitzgerald, WOWSA CEO states “We are thrilled to support the pioneers in our sport who test limits and establish new challenges. Congratulations to the team at SwimÖresund, who have created a truly epic crossing from Denmark to Sweden for open water swimmers around the world to train for and enjoy.”
On the 9th of August 2022, Mariel Hawley of Mexico was the first swimmer to complete the crossing in the new cooperation between SwimÖresund and WOWSA. She swam in 8 hours 59 minutes. It was a very challenging and epic swim because of the mischievous and strong current. See Mariel’s data here
Hawley commented “I’m very grateful for being invited by SwimÖresund to do the inaugural swim across the Öresund, which is beautiful, the ocean here is majestic and the challenge is incredible, and all this summons as a very attractive adventure for swimmers around the world. After completing the Oceans Seven in 2019, I decided I wanted to open up new swimming routes, and the Öresund Strait has been magical.“
