Viewed from every angle, the sea swim in Cancún was an outstanding race between Luiz Lima, a two-time Olympian from Brazil, and Fernando Betanzos, one of the brightest young Mexican swimmers, at the 10 km El Cruce (Por La Libre), a 10 km crossing from Cancún to Mexico's famed Isla Mujeres.
