Daily News of Open Water Swimming: You are constantly smiling whenever you are by water. Why is that?

Tanya MacLean: I grew up swimming in lakes in and around Toronto and have always enjoyed being in the water. When I was younger my parents had to drag me out of the water when I was blue and shivering because I never wanted to get out of the water. I am now lucky enough to live in Southern California and I figure any chance to be in the water is a good reason to smile.

Daily News of Open Water Swimming: Cold, warm; rough, calm; short, long. Nothing seems to bother you in the ocean. Why is that?

Tanya MacLean: I try to take everything in stride since the variation of the water conditions is part of the fun and adventure of open water swimming. The conditions on my swim were a little daunting but I just kept telling myself that all I had to do was keep moving and I would get to the shore eventually.

Daily News of Open Water Swimming: What do you eat and drink on your long swims?

Tanya MacLean: I fed on a combination of maltodextrin/apple juice/water on all the feeds and then added peaches, Reese’s peanut butter cups and energy gels periodically later in the swim.

Sounds good, all around.
