Taxonomic Hierarchy In The Open Water

The zoological name for the human species is Homo sapiens where Homo is the generic name and sapiens indicates the species.

Students learn about Homo erectus (upright man) and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis (Neanderthals) in school. For fun, we assigned imaginery taxonomic ranks to the humans who swim:

Home frigidissimus – humans who specialize in ice swimming
Homo distantia – humans who specialize in marathon swimming
Homo longus – humans who specialize in ultra marathon swimming
Homo oceanus – humans who specialize in ocean swimming or surf life saving
Homo fossa – humans who specialize in channel swimming
Homo circulus – humans who specialize in circumnavigation swims
Homo calidus – humans who specialize in tropical swims or warm water swims
Homo novicius – humans who are beginners to open water swimming, newbies
Homo venerandus – humans who have swum all their lives
Homo disicere – humans who specialize in stage swims
Homo flumen – humans who specialize in river swimming
Homo lacuna – humans who specialize in lake swimming
Homo admodum – humans who do extreme swims of any kind
Homo gladius – humans who escort or guide swimmers, pilots
Homo nequedum – humans who cannot (yet) swim
Homo piscinæ – humans who only swim in pools
