The 1970 America’s Marathon Swim In Rhode Island

America’s Marathon Swim was held in 1970 that started on Island Park in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and finished 26.7 miles (42.9 km) later at King’s Park in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island.

Its sanction was held by the World Professional Marathon Swimming Federation and was dedicated to its founder and chairman the late Captain Roger W. Wheeler of Rhode Island.

Swimmers came from 21 countries including Argentina, Holland, Mexico, United Arab Republic, England, Canada, Syria, Brazil, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Sudan, Spain, New Zealand and the U.S.A. First place received US$2,000. The first woman to cross the finish line received a US$100 bonus.
