The Growth Of Open Water Swimming In Latin America

The Growth Of Open Water Swimming In Latin America

The growth of open water swimming in Latin America is, quite simply, off the charts.

While the COVID-19 pandemic slowed, postponed and cancelled many annual events, the number of people heading to the open water has not slowed from Mexico to Argentina.

From the shorter competitive races in Mexico [see Top 50 List below] to the extreme cold water challenges in Patagonia [under the guidance of Cristian Vergara and Julieta Nuñez that includes the Beagle Channel, the Straits of Magellan, and the Cape Horn swim] to the longer marathon swims like the 36 km Travessia do Leme ao Pontal in Rio de Janeiro, the growth of the sport has been exponential,” observed Steven Munatones. “The absolute number of swimmers – from ice swimmers to marathon swimmers, and coaches, race officials, and volunteers continues to grow. Even the number of documentary films, published books, and multimedia presentations has expanded significantly.”

Bárbara Hernández Huerta, Matías Ola, and Victoria Mori embody the growth in the cold with their ice swimming and glacier swimming exploits.

Nora Toledano, Mariel Hawley Dávila, Lucas Rivet, and Adherbal Treidler de Oliveira embody the growth in the marathon distances with their new channel and marathon events and exploits.

Relatively new organizations from Swim Argentina,Patagonia Swim,Travessia do Leme ao Pontal, Asociación Cruce a Nado Río de la Plata (ACNRP), Triple Corona Sudamericana, new channel swims like the St. Lucia Channel in the Caribbean Sea and the Cozumel Channel along the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, and new races like the Amazon Challenge and several dozens more along the Brazilian coast and inland waterways are popping up more and more frequently. These new swims stretch from north to south, from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea and many places between.

The growth includes not only the number of new events, but also the growing number of participants in each race – like one of the world’s largest marathon swimming events, theEl Cruce Cancún-Isla Mujeres in Mexico. “And the expansion looks like there is no slowing down,” says Munatones.
