RKA Sanghita Pal talked about her role model, her father and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Swimmer Brojen Das on a special Father’s Day edition of WOWSA Live with International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Administrator Ned Denison:

Das was the first Asian and Bangladeshi to swim across the English Channel. He was born in 1927 in Kuchiamora village of Bikrampur, Munshiganj, in East Pakistan (Bangladesh). His daughter acknowledges that “my father was mad about swimming.”

He trained in the turbulent waters of river Ganga (Buriganga) where he started to develop his expertise in 1953. In 1958, he received an invitation to take part in the 1958 Billy Butlin Cross Channel International Swim so he trained in the lower Megna River and he swam 74 km from Narayanganj to Chandpur and then swam 48 hours in Dhaka swimming pool.

He arrived in England in June 1958 for the Billy Butlin Channel Swimming Competition. Swimmers from 23 countries joined the contest and Brojen was the only swimmer from South Asia. The race began at midnight in August 1958 with Brojen winning in the afternoon of the next day (see here).

In 1959, Brojen raced from the Capri Island to Napoli in Italy, and later swam from English to France. The next year he crossed the English Channel again from France to England.  In 1961, Brojen has crossed the English Channel six times.

Brojen Das, who was respectfully regarded as Brojenda, received the “Pride of Performance” Award in 1959 from the Pakistan government while earning the title of King of the Channel from the Channel Swimming Association in 1986. Bangladesh government gave him the national award in 1976 for his valuable contribution in the field of athletics.
