The Lone Woman Of San Nicolas Island

With all the recent activity in the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association, it is always fascinating to read about the history of these California Channel Islands.

One of the true stories of these islands was documented for history in an American children’s novel written by Scott O’Dell called Island of the Blue Dolphins. The story, based on the actual life of Juana Maria, a Nicoleño Indian, who was left alone for 18 years on San Nicolas Island in the 19th century.

Stranded alone on an uninhabited island, her solitude is unimaginable. Yet her fortitude and will to survive is truly worthy of a legendary figure in history. A depiction of her life in the film Island of the Blue Dolphins is below:
