As the open water swimming world continues to expand globally, we marvel as the potential for Africa’s growth. Similar to Asia and the Americas, open water swims are popping up in many of African locations.

While cartographers attempt to make world maps as accurate as possible, the scale of each country and each continent is fascinating to observe.

Compared to some major countries around the world, the immensity of the African continent is magnificent to behold – especially if you are an open water swimmer considering places to swim along its 32,000 km of coastline and numerous rivers and offshore islands.

Besides the world’s largest open water swimming competition at the aQuellé Midmar Mile and famous open water events stretching from Cape Town to the Red Sea, Africa has hundreds – if not thousands – of open water swims of all types.

The list of Africa’s Top 100 Open Water Swims is here.
