It is occasionally written that marathon swimming was the national sport in Egypt, although it would be hard to imagine that marathon swimming is bigger than football in Egypt.

But top Egyptian marathon swimmers in the 1950s and 1960s were certainly larger than life and competed with – and beat – the best in the world. They traveled the world, trained as a team, and were internationally successful. Many were inducted as Honor Swimmers in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame including:

* Abdellatief Abou Heif, known as the Crocodile of the Nile * Captain Nabil Elshazly
* Nasser Elshazly
* Ishak Helmy
* Mohamed Ahmed Marouf
* Dr. Osama Ahmed Momtaz
* Shadia El Rageb
* Hassan Abdel Rheim
* General Omar Sabry
* Major General Ahmed Zorkani
