Tough Trio For Teenager, But Tired She Triumphs

Varada Dharmadhikari started her week by swimming 10 km from Robben Island to Three Anchor Bay in South Africa in 13-14°C water in 3 hours 12 minutes. Four days later, she completed the 2.5 km Around The Rocks Extreme Swim and then completed an 18 km swim around Robben Island to Bloubergstrand.

I was amazed to witness her temperament,” Peter Bales, the chairman of the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association.

[Varada] was cheerful all the time even during her struggle against the currents. I never have seen such kind of approach.”

The 16-year-old explained her mindset, “Jitendra Khasnis, my coach, told me don’t swim 18 km; instead assume that you are swimming set of 180 x 100 meters on 2 minutes. I used those tactics. The water was really cold and initially I was under great pressure, but my training at Clifton in 11°C (51.8°F) helped me a lot. I just had decided to keep swimming during the event and not to give up what so ever happens. [But] I was terrified to see dolphins and seals. They are harmless, but I could not stop myself thinking of sharks.

I achieved what I dreamt and worked hard for a long time. But its concluded now and I will surely miss it a lot. Now I feel I should go one step further, may be English Channel in the coming season.”
