While swimmers like Stewart Evans (1967), Ted Erikson (1967), Craig Lenning (2014), Joseph Locke (2014), and Kimberley Chambers (2015) have successfully completed solo swims to or from the Farallon Islands, this 30-mile stretch of water is risky at best.
But in addition to Great White Sharks and cold water, the water is usually turbulent and always tidal where locations like the Potato Patch are notorious for causing shipwrecks and marine vessel damages.
At this week’s International Ocean Film Festival in San Francisco, California, the film Three Miles from Safety: The Story of the USS Conestoga tells of one previously unsolved marine story in this area.
