Travessia dos Fortes Is Esporte Espetacular

Ricardo Ratto, one of the most experienced open water safety experts and administrators in the world, and the race organization committee and its volunteers put together another outstanding 3.5 km Travessia dos Fortes in Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The annual tradition across one of the world’s most famous beaches was televised live throughout Brazil.

The nationwide Esporte Espetacular program showcased the race in 40-minute broadcast that reached an audience of over 10 million people. Luis Rogerio Arapiraca, Samuel De Bona and Fernando Estanislau Ponte and Luis Lima came in 1-2-3-4 in the same venue that will be used at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Isabelle Longo, Betina Lorscheitter and Izabela Fortini captured the top podium spots among the women.

Among the many safety features that Ricardo and his crew organize for the competition included a flashy new finish structure and the following equipment and individuals:

• 7 safety boats with for over 20 people
• 30 inflatable boats
• 5 Jet Skis
• 25 kayaks
• 50 lifeguards paddling on long boards
• 5 medical boats with doctors, nurses and medical equipment
• 2 helicopters
• 1 fast watercraft
• 10 stand-up paddle boarders
• 4 ambulances
• 100+ lifeguards in water

Nothing would be possible without the participation of several institutions like Brazilian Army, Brazilian Navy, Brazilian Swimming Federation, Corpo de Bombeiros Militar do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (lifeguards), Rio’s State and Municipality Governments, the promoter Company IMX, LUARSA sports events and the sponsors, Embratel,Lorenzetti and The Law for Sports Development, that designates funds by waiving taxes from Rio’s State Government,” explains Ricardo.
