The Triple Corona Illas Atlánticas (Atlantic Islands Triple Crown) will hold its third edition from the Island of Ons to Combarro (Poio) in Galicia, Spain on September 4th. Wetsuits and escort kayakers are compulsory for the maximum field of 120 swimmers. There will be six feeding stations over the 23 km course.

The 23 km course from Combarro to Ons is the third edition after the 15 km course from Cíes to Baiona in 2018 and the 12 km course in O Grove in 2019. Together and cumulatively, the Atlantic Islands Triple Crown is a competitive challenge that includes three swims that covers a total distance of 57 km between 2018 and 2021 in the water of the Rías Baixas in Galicia.

Each of the three swims will depart from an island in the Atlantic Islands National Park in Galicia: Cíes in 2018, Sálvora in 2019, and Ons in 2021. The first of the three events, a 15 km swim in 2018, saw 150 swimmers swim between the Island of Cíes and Baiona. The second 12 km race was held in 2019 in Confín Beach in O Grove with 161 swimmers. This year, the final and longest event will kick off from the Island of Ons and will finish in Combarro (Poio) with expectations that the average duration will be more than nine hours.

Beatriz Alvariño Díaz del Río of Atlantic Extrem Sports describes the Triple Crown, “The objectives of this challenge are to highlight the natural wealth of these islands that make up the Atlantic Islands National Park in Galicia, promote the Rías Baixas and turn this sporting challenge into one of the reference swimming events in  Spain and Europe. The average swimmer is an experienced athlete in excellent physical shape with mental strength who is used to swimming long distances more than 10 km. Swimmers will face headwinds, currents, waves, low water temperatures, and the severity of the open ocean.”

Registration is at www.championchipnorte.com where swimmers must provide proof of having completed a 12 km swim over the past four years. For more information, visit www.triplecoronaillasatlanticas.com or on Facebook.

Atlantic Extreme Sports organizes the Costa Serena Swim (800m, 2.7 km and 4 km) in Nigrán (Galicia) with the collaboration of the sports club Tumetapersonal Club.
