UltraMarathon - Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean

Morgane Dornic of France won her second Traversée Internationale du Lac St-Jean of her career on the WOWSA UltraMarathon, held on Saturday in Roberval, Quebec, Canada.

The 23-year-old from France was fast. She came within striking distance of finishing among her male counterparts on the podium, less than 1 minute behind third-place Aleksandar Ilievski of Northern Macedonia. Four other women competed in the famed lake course: Pilar Geijo (2nd), Rita Vanesa Garcia (3rd), Daira Eluney Marin (4th), and Émilie Tremblay (OTL).

On the men’s side, veteran professional marathon swimmer Edoardo Stochino won his fourth career gold medal, finishing comfortably ahead of the field in 6 hours 55 minutes. The 34-year-old from Italy had last won a gold on the same Traversée Internationale du Lac St-Jean course in 2018 in 7 hours 10 minutes. He finished 2nd in both 2013 and 2016.

Traversée internationale du lac Saint-Jean

Each summer since 1955, the Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean attracts the world’s elite professional open water swimmers to Roberval. One of the world’s most prestigious professional races with a long and rich history.Water temperature and winds can vary, but water temperature under 20°C (68°F) is expected.

The Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean is a 32 km open water swimming race between Péribonka and Roberval. The event is always presented on the last Saturday of July. In 2022, this “cult” marathon will mark 68 consecutive years of presentation, making it one of the most long-lived sports events in North America and around the world. In 1994, a scientific study in American “Outside” magazine classified the Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean among the six most challenging sports events in the world.

During the last week of July, Roberval comes alive and sways to the rhythm of activities surrounding the Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean. Numerous sports, cultural and family-oriented events allow the local population and visitors a chance to celebrate the event while having fun. Supper in the Streets Loto-Quebec, outdoor shows, fireworks, a Children’s Day, sports competitions, an art gallery, a Happy Hour, etc.: a host of activities designed to appeal to people of all tastes and ages!

The Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean Inc. is the organization entrusted with the annual staging of seven (7) open water swimming competitions, at the elite and amateur levels. Around the world, the Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean Inc. is hailed as a model of organization and professionalism. Year after year, it receives accolades from its participants, most notably in regards to the quality of its organizational structure and the support offered to the athletes.
