Describe Your Event

The Jarak-Sabac International Swimming Marathon is known in the world as the “Race of Peace”.

The Jarak-Šabac International Swimming Marathon swims along the Sava River in a length of 18 km and 880 meters, which is the water section between the Srem village of Jarak and Šabac, near the “Stari grad” beach. However, over the years, the concept of the marathon has changed. Years passed, attitudes, wishes, needs as well as people’s views changed, but one thing always followed the “Jarak-Šabac” swimming marathon – the desire and determination of the inhabitants of Jarak and Šabac to tear from oblivion the memory of the tragic march and preserve the memory of the heroic works of local Jarko I Šabac.

The marathon is held in commemoration of the “Bloody March” of 4,500 Šapčans who, in September 1941, under the threat of death, ran 22 kilometers to the German camp in Jark.

In 2018, the marathon became part of the Global swim series and the Open Water Swimming Cup, which contribute to the greater half-parity of the marathon. In addition to the sports part, the fun part of the program, the competition in preparing a fish kettle, the National Beach Wrestling Competition are an integral part of the manifestation on the Sava River, which returns Šapčani as one of the city’s greatest natural potentials.
