Registration opens March 28th at www.swim-challenge.com
For the first time, Portugal will be hosting a stage of the most challenging open water ultra-marathon swimming circuit, the UltraMarathon Swim Series organized by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA). The Travessia Lisboa Cascais, which will take place on September 23rd with a 20km course, will be the longest race ever held in mainland Portugal.
Starting at Doca de Belém, framed by Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the race crosses the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras and Cascais, with the finish line at Praia dos Pescadores.
On the same Saturday, September 23rd, there will be a not less challenging 10km aquatic marathon. This crossing starts from Praia da Torre in Oeiras, and the finish line is also at Praia dos Pescadores, in Cascais.
The two races are part of the 11th edition of the LIDL Swim Challenge, which is set to become a major international event with a weekend full of novelties.
The LIDL Swim Challenge program continues on Sunday, September 24th, with a range of challenges for professionals and amateurs, including the 3.8km, 1.9km, and 1km races, as well as a new 5km race that brings together all official Olympic open-water distances. The Swim Challenge races will take place in a closed-circuit format, starting and finishing at Praia dos Pescadores in Cascais. This format will transform the village bay into a natural stadium that will be filled with spectators.
The distances for children, 200m and 400m, complete the program.
From Jorge Paulo Pereira, the event organizer from 3 Iron Sports:
“This invitation gave us the unique opportunity to create, in Portugal, one of the most challenging races in the world, and be a part of a world circuit. Being internationally recognized for our trajectory in the sport fills us with pride, in particular for open-water swimming.”
“It has been confirmed that world-class athletes will participate in the Travessia Lisboa Cascais 20km and Travessia Oeiras Cascais 10km events, drawn to the uniqueness of swimming in the Tejo estuary and along the stunning coastline, which is like a true postcard. Open-water swimming has a rich tradition in our country, and we hope to revive significant achievements from the past to inspire a new generation of swimmers. We anticipate record-breaking international participation at this swimming festival.”
Online registration opens on March 28th, so be sure to visit the website at www.swim-challenge.com and secure your spot in the race.
