Come join us July 24, 2021 for the great Newburgh to Beacon swim!
To raise funds for the pool, River Pool at Beacon, Inc. organizes a fundraising swim every summer. Swimmers are asked to pay a registration fee to cover costs for the swim and to raise at least $100 for the operation and management of the pool.
Since the cross-river swim began in 2004 with sixty-five swimmers ranging in age from 13 to 78, between 100 and over 200 swimmers have participated every year. The one-mile passage, scheduled to coincide with slack tide, begins at the Newburgh marina and ends at the Beacon waterfront where music, food, family, and friends are all part of the swim celebration. The swim is coordinated with the US Coast Guard Waterways Management Division with control of local marine traffic while swimmers are guided by a flotilla of volunteer kayakers, jet skiers and support vessels that escort swimmers to ensure safety.
Whether participants are swimming to mark a personal milestone, training for a triathlon, or simply enjoying the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of our country’s grandest waterways, the annual river swim has become a favorite Hudson Valley summer event. Due to concerns about the Coronavirus, the swim was cancelled for summer 2020. We fully expect to be up, running, and swimming next summer.
SWIM MISSION
The 17th Annual Great Newburgh to Beacon Hudson River Swim is designed as a pleasant fund-raising swim, not as a competitive event. All participants register in advance for the 1-mile open water swim. The event is scheduled for swimmers to splash in from the Newburgh waterfront 30-45 minutes before slack-before-flood current, then swim across the Hudson River (including the navigation channel), escorted by kayakers, to the Beacon waterfront.
Many of the swimmers, kayakers, and support volunteers are annual participants. In the event of inclement or hazardous weather, the event is scheduled to take place on the following day.
