USA Swimming Announces Coaching Team and Athletes for World Aquatics Open Water Championships in Fukuoka 2023

USA Swimming has officially announced the coaches and participants who will be partaking in the highly anticipated World Aquatics Open Water Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. The competition on July 15-20 (July 14, 15, 17, 19 in the U.S.), will be at the scenic Seaside Momochi Beach Park in Fukuoka.

Leading the team as head coach is Ron Aitken, the head coach and executive director of the Sandpipers of Nevada. Assisting him is Cory Chitwood, a prominent member of the coaching staff at Indiana University for the past four seasons. Both Aitken and Chitwood previously were on the U.S. coaching staff for the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup held in Golfo Aranci, Italy earlier this year. They also played pivotal coaching roles at the 2022 FINA (now World Aquatics) Open Water World Championships.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, Bryce Elser, USA Swimming’s National Team Open Water Director, stated,

“It’s been an exciting spring of open water racing. Coach Aitken and Coach Chitwood bring extensive experience in the sport and international competitions. In the last several years, both Ron and Cory have proven their ability to work with our Open Water National Team Athletes, and I am extremely confident in their ability to set the team up for some successful swims in Fukuoka. We’re looking forward to seeing the hard work put in by our athletes when they take to the water in Japan.”
