What’s A Blinkie?

Courtesy of WOWSA, Huntington Beach, California.

A blinkie is a flashing battery-powered illumination, often red- or green-colored, that is attached to an open water swimmer’s goggle strap. The flashing light can be seen during a night swim or in low visibility conditions in a channel swim or marathon swim.

Some swimmers use only glow sticks on their swim caps or on their kayakers and paddle boarders during a night swim; but others are more comfortable with disc lights or chemical lights.
