Who Will Be The Final 15 Olympic Qualifiers In Portugal?

35 women from 21 countries will be fighting it out to be among the top 15 swimmers at the upcoming Olympic marathon swim qualifier in Setubal Bay in Portugal.

The following women are entered and ready to battle for the final 15 positions in the Olympic marathon swim in London. No lanes, no lines, no walls…no mercy. 35 women, each with Olympic dreams, aiming for 15 spots.

While there are some obviously strong swimmers who are favored to qualify and who will certainly be in the top pack, there are also very interesting and competitive races-within-the-race among swimmers from the same country.

Because only one swimmer from each country can qualify in this race, the competition between Nadine Williams and Zsofia Balazs of Canada, Lizeth Rueda Santos and Alejandra Gonzalez Lara of Mexico, Maaike Waaijer and Linsy Heister of the Netherlands, Charlotte Webby and Cara Baker of New Zealand, Jessica Roux and Natalie du Toit of South Africa (see video below), Anna Guseva and Ekaterina Seliverstova of Russia, and Haley Anderson and Ashley Twichell of the USA will be close and strategic. Not only must these swimmers secure their place in the top 15, but they must also beat their fellow countryman en route to qualifying for the Olympics.

But swimmers like Yanqiao Fang of China, Karla Sitic of Croatia, Yumi Kida of Japan, Lizeth Rueda Santos and Alejandra Gonzalez Lara of Mexico, Maaike Waaijer and Linsy Heister of the Netherlands, Charlotte Webby and Cara Baker of New Zealand, Anna Guseva and Ekaterina Seliverstova of Russia, Olga Beresnyeva of Ukraine and Haley Anderson and Ashley Twichell of the USA, and Yanel Pinto of Venezuela are among the favorites to be in the lead pack.

The eyes of Malaysia will also be on young countrywomen Heidi Gan while South Africa will see a renewal of the rivalry between Jessica Roux and Natalie du Toit, the famed amputee Olympian who is trying to qualify for her second Olympics. The video below shows how close du Toit and Roux are in their last swim in South Africa.
