Why Make A Fist In The Open Water?

Douglas Mckell asked the English Channel swimming community how best to cope with the contraction of tendons and muscles in your arm which causes me to have my hand begin to make an involuntary fist while swimming in water below 55ºF (12.7ºC)?

Ice swimming stalwart and International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame honouree Ned Denison recommends, “When your hand leaves the water, clench your fist and release. Do this whenever you tighten up.”
