William Stein Peacefully Passes Away

Dr. Christopher Stockdale, who was the inaugural winner of the Van Audenaerde Cup for his 17 hour 30 minute crossing of the English Channel in 1977 reported that William Stein, MBE passed away peacefully in his nursing home on August 14th.

Stein was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Swimming in the 1996 Queen’s Birthday honours list in 1996.

Even though he was unsuccessful in his first England-to-France English Channel attempt, he received the Van Audenaerde Cup in 1978 by the Channel Swimming Association for Greatest Feat of Endurance of the Year.

The next year on August 29th 1979, he completed a crossing of the English Channel in 16 hours 9 minutes and received a Special Award to a Disabled Swimmer by the Channel Swimming Association.

In 1996, he received a MBE for his service to the sport of swimming.
