The open water is a great equalizer. High navigational IQ knows no gender or age barriers.

Gertrude Ederle showed the world that women could swim across the English Channel. Lynne Cox did things no man dreamed before. Penny Dean crushed not only the English Channel record, but also the Catalina Channel records that still stands from 1976.

So it comes to no surprise that another male record may come tumbling down today, at the hands of a woman.

Today, American Marcy MacDonald is attempting her 15th English Channel crossing today. If successfully, she will set the American record for all-time channel crossings overcoming the standard set by Peter Jurzynski.

Her pilot Mike Oram is escorting her aboard on the Gallivant yet again. Their course can be followed online here.
