Field is limited to 25 solo swimmers and 18 relay teams that start and finish at Battery Park City. Fields sells out in less than 45 minutes. Race first held in 1927. Substantial surface chop and strong tidal pull are possible. Water temperature varies between 17 – 19°C (64 – 67°F). Course may also include random jetsam and flotsam. A Qualifying Swim must be completed before application will be accepted.

The 20 Bridges Manhattan Island Swim (or the 20 Bridges Circumnavigation Swim of Manhattan, the Manhattan 20 Bridges Swim, the 20 Bridges Manhattan Swim, or the 20 Bridges Manhattan Island Circumnavigation) is a 28.5-mile (45.9 km) circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island in New York organized by New York Open Water, an open water swimming organization that also stages open water swims in New York including the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim. It is part of the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming challenges and is annually named as one the World’s Top 100 Island Swims in 2018 and 2019 by the World Open Water Swimming Association.
